Toxic Soil Remediation

Pierce County Health Hazards:

Soil samples collected throughout Pierce County, were used to evaluate soil contamination associated with the former Asarco smelter located in Tacoma, this analysis examines harmful soil levels in relation to kid dense residential areas for the purpose of determining areas in need of Toxic Remediation.

ArcGIS Tools + Methods

  • Performed a Dissolve to combine multiple data points collected at the same location into a sinlge dataset for soil contamination.

  • Analyzed density of arsenic and lead contamination using a Kriging interpolation method converting point sources data into a raster

  • Analyzed census data and created new data sets focusing on kid (ages 0-10) density within pierce county, then used an IDW interpolation method to help visualize kid density as a raster.

  • Finally performed Raster calculations to find high concentrations of arsenic and lead contaminates in relation to kid dense areas. The result of this raster calculation created a new raster displaying areas which present the greatest need for toxic remediation.
